Saqijuq Launches Mobile Intervention Team in Kuujjuaq

Saqijuq, in partnership with Nunavik Police Service, is proud to announce the launch of the Mobile Intervention Team (MIT) in Kuujjuaq!
What is MIT?

The Mobile Intervention Team is made up of two people:
  • One community worker
  • One community police officer
Together, they walk side by side with the community to help in moments of crisis, whether it’s suicide prevention, conjugal violence, mental health challenges, or supporting children and youth at risk.

MIT’s mission
De-escalate, support, and heal through family- and community-centered interventions that avoid criminalization or stigma. Using non-violent techniques, they provide timely, respectful assistance tailored to each person’s unique needs.

MIT is about bringing a new way of caring directly to the community. By combining the expertise of a community worker and a community police officer from the NPS, we create a trusted presence that supports Kuujjuamiut in their most difficult moments. Our goal is to listen first, respond with compassion, and work hand in hand with individuals and families to find respectful, healing solutions. This team reflects the strength of partnership and cultural understanding, and we are proud to offer this vital service to Kuujjuaq.

How it works in Kuujjuaq

The MIT patrols in the community in an identified Saqijuq vehicle and responds to calls for support.
The team also joins local events and activities to build relationships and be present for Kuujjuamiut

🕓 Hours of service: Monday to Saturday, 4:00 PM – 1:00 AM

📞 Phone: Call NPS and ask for MIT at:
• (819) 964-2095
• (819) 964-9111 (emergency)

A proven approach

In Puvirnituq, where MIT started in 2019, the team has helped hundreds of people:
  • ✅ 595 interventions in 2024 alone
  • ✅ 89% collaboration rate
  • ✅ 97% non-judicial outcomes
This means fewer arrests, fewer hospital transports, and more moments of real support, rooted in trust, culture, and community strength. We are proud to now bring this same approach to Kuujjuaq.
