Safety First: Saqijuq Teams Complete Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) Training

Saqijuq employees gathered in Kuujjuaq to complete the WAFA training. Team members travelled from Akulivik, Puvirnituq, Inukjuak, Kangiqsualujjuaq, and Kangiqsujuaq to join colleagues from Kuujjuaq for this important and intensive course.
The WAFA training focuses on essential first-aid skills for emergencies in remote Arctic regions, where immediate medical assistance is not always available. It helps participants develop critical skills to manage risks and provide extended care in challenging environments, strengthening safety standards across outdoor and on-the-land programs throughout Nunavik.

Over the 5-day course, participants learned and practiced:
– CPR, AED, and basic life support skills
– Management of critical body systems (shock, respiratory issues, head injuries)
– Assessment and splinting of bone, muscle, and joint injuries
– Spine injury management
– Allergies and anaphylaxis
– Medical emergencies (cardiac issues, asthma, diabetes)
– Wound and burn management
– Environmental emergencies (hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, lightning, drowning)

Beyond the learning, it was truly special to see so many familiar Saqijuq faces together in one place. We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity for our teams from different communities to meet, reconnect, spend meaningful time together, and strengthen the bonds that make working together so natural and enjoyable.

A heartfelt thank you to our training partner Boreal River Rescue, and to Devorah Sugarman and Michael Mechan, whose expertise, dedication, and engaging approach made this training a great success. Thank you as well to the Sustainable Employment Department of Kativik Regional Government for their valuable financial support.

Finally, thank you to our incredible Saqijuq team members. Your commitment to being present for community members in all situations, and your dedication to ensuring safety, assistance, and guidance in every condition, truly reflects the values of Saqijuq.
