MIT Intervener
Location: Salluit

Status: Rotation, every four (4) weeks
Monday to Saturday, five (5) to six (6) days/week, evening and night, depending on operational needs

Mobile Intervention Team (MIT)
Composed of a social worker and a Nunavik Police Service officer, the MIT is trained to respond to and de-escalate situations such as suicide crisis, conjugal violence, mental health and children at risk. The MIT uses a community-based approach by mobilizing the local resources to establish a safety net for the individuals supported with their interventions. The MIT is actively present in the community for prevention purposes, and to intervene in crisis situation.
Description
As a MIT Intervener, you provide thoughtful and compassionate support during psychological crisis situations as well as emergencies within the community and ensure the safety, dignity, and rights of individuals in distress. You contribute to the improvement of the well-being and the safety of community members through responsive, respectful, inclusive and culturally relevant interventions.
You build positive, trusting, and community-based relationships with community members through your strong presence and active engagement in prevention-focused activities in collaboration with local partners and community members. You also promote the services offered by the MIT program, and ensure that they are visible, accessible, and culturally relevant to the needs and reality of the community.
Responsibilities
Prevention & Intervention
– Work and intervene as a team, with a Nunavik Police Service officer, to respond to emergency psychosocial calls such as suicidal crisis, conjugal and domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health, youth at risks, sexual abuse, etc.
– Intervene directly with individuals in crisis or conflict situations, applying de-escalation and pacification strategies to help resolve the situation safely and respectfully.
– Conduct social patrols within the community with a primary focus on prevention and early intervention to address emerging needs before they escalate.
– Find immediate, and creative solutions to answer the needs of the individuals while ensuring culturally relevant and safe ways to intervene.
– Provide support, guidance, and make referral to proper resources, when necessary.
– Write and document intervention details and create statistics reports.
– Provide post-intervention support and feedback, when requested by the individuals, the community members involved, or the partners.
Partnership & Promotion
– Participate and organize community events to promote healthy ways of living and prevent psychosocial crisis and issues.
– Create partnership and work in close collaboration with professional involved in psychosocial crises, such as social workers, intervenors, youth protection workers, police officers, rehabilitation services, community workers, healthcare providers, community organizations, etc.
– Ensure constant visibility of the MIT program by promoting and informing the partners as well as the community members of the MIT services.
Other
– Stay informed and up to date on best practices and changes in relevant laws, as well as contribute to a culture of learning by sharing knowledge and experience with interveners and team members.
– Provide information on clinical aspects of various legislation (such as Act P-38, LSSS, LPJ) to police officers and partners, when needed.
– Perform any other tasks requested by, and work in collaboration with, the Director, Program Development (OTL and MIT) and/or the MIT Coordinator.
Qualifications
Work Experience
– Two (2) years of experience in the health and social services network and/or in crisis intervention, mental health, or substance abuse.
– Work experience in Nunavik, a major asset.
– Significant knowledge of the Inuit culture, traditional and cultural ways of teaching, an asset.
Education
– University degree in social sciences (psychology, psychoeducation, social work, criminology, etc.).
Or
– Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS) in Specialized Education Technique, Social Service, Delinquency Intervention Technique, or a related discipline combined with similar work experience.
Languages
– Fluency in English is essential, because it’s the common language in workplaces across Nunavik.
– Good communication and writing skills in one (1) of the other two (2) languages used in Nunavik (Inuktitut or French).
Knowledge and Skills
– Completion of trainings on suicide prevention, crisis intervention, OMEGA or related subjects.
– Knowledge of the following Quebec acts:
:: Act respecting health services and social services (LSSSS)
:: Youth Protection Act (LPJ)
:: Act respecting the protection of persons whose mental state presents a danger to themselves or to others (P-38)
– Diplomatic sense, flexibility, tolerance for ambiguity and change.
– Ability to collaborate and work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
– Perseverance, adaptability, innovation in finding solutions, and the ability to intervene effectively in high-stress situations.
– Respect for the Inuit culture and its traditions.
– Open-minded and willing to discover different visions and approaches to the individual, family and social problems.
– Mobilizing leadership, creativity, and initiative to develop and organize events as well as community activities that actively contribute to the well-being, engagement, and energy of the community.
– Possess a valid driver’s license.

Work environment
– Job position based in Salluit, Nunavik (four (4) weeks on/off rotation).
– Housing is provided by Saqijuq for the duration of each rotation in Nunavik.
– The MIT program is in the deployment phase, which requires flexibility and a strong ability to adapt within a political environment.
