Our OTL team had been preparing for weeks, harvesting country food, cutting and cooking, shopping for snacks and prizes, to make this day possible. Their commitment and heart are at the core of what we do. Nakurmiik!
On the morning of the ceremony, a large crowd gathered in front of the new building. The event was led by Maata Putugu from our Board of Directors, beginning with a prayer and blessing by Priest Esau Tatatoapik. We then heard meaningful words from Deputy Mayor Adamie Angiyou and Sarah Beaulne, Executive Director at Inuulitsivik Health Centre.
We also shared a few words about our staff, services, and the history of Saqijuq in Puvirnituq.
One of the most touching moments was the ribbon cutting. Terry Qumaluk, the first court-appointed participant of the OTL program and a long-time supporter, cut the ribbon using a panak, the traditional snow knife used to build igloos. A powerful symbol of growth, resilience, and new beginnings.
After touring the office, the community gathered at the Satuumavik Gymnasium for a feast. Over 300 raffle tickets were distributed, and more than 500 people joined us, which meant so much to us! Congratulations to all the raffle winners, and a special thank you to ᒪᑭᕝᕕᒃ – Makivvik for generously providing a free airplane ticket.
Even the next day, people were calling the local FM radio to share their appreciation. Seeing the community come together is a true testament to why Saqijuq exists: to share, support, and celebrate Inuit culture. Nakurmiik Puvirnituqmiut, for celebrating this milestone with us!
