Our Story
From Regional Initiative to Community Organization
Saqijuq was launched in the spring of 2014 by Nunavik’s Regional Partnership Committee as a culturally grounded, community-led response to the complex social challenges facing Inuit communities. The initiative quickly began shaping its mission, vision, and coordination structure, leading to the adoption of its official mandate and the drafting of an action plan in 2015–2016.
The first On-the-Land (OTL) team was created in Puvirnituq in 2016, followed by the implementation of a local Mobile Intervention Team (MIT) in the spring of 2019. In 2019, the Nitsiq Wellness Court was launched, and in the winter of that same year, the Kangirsuk OTL team was created, officially launching in spring 2020. The Akulivik OTL team followed in 2020, and the process to establish the Kangiqsualujjuaq OTL team began in 2022. In 2023, the Inukjuak OTL team was launched.
A major turning point came in the fall of 2023 when Saqijuq became an independent non-profit community organization. That year saw the adoption of bylaws, the election of the first Board of Directors, and the transfer of employees to the new structure. In 2024, the organization hired its first Executive Director and also launched its OTL program in Kangiqsujuaq in the spring, then in Kuujjuaq in the fall of 2024. While the Nitsiq+ project’s governance was later returned to the health sector, Saqijuq continues to play a key role in delivering its services, maintaining consistency and community trust.
