About Saqijuq
a change in wind direction
ᓴᕿᔪᖅ Saqijuq, “a change in wind direction” in Inuktitut, is a non-profit organization based in Nunavik dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles, strengthening cultural connections, and rehabilitating individuals. Our goal is to enhance community safety, reduce the physical and psychological impact of substance abuse on families and communities, and provide alternatives to incarceration. We are committed to fostering intergenerational and community connections and ensuring the well-being of all.
Saqijuq comprises two key programs: an On-the-Land program, and a Mobile Intervention Team program. These components enable us to support Inuit during significant moments in their lives, helping them reconnect with their culture and community, and acquire healthier lifestyles.
Our Mission
Promote Cultural Healing in Nunavik Through Community Actions Rooted in Inuit Values and Tradition
Our Values
We respect the Inuit ways of doing and living, by involving Inuit at all levels, from identifying the needs, the means, the planning, the decision-making to the achievement and the evaluation of every projects. We listen to make others feel safe and comfortable enough that they can express themselves the way they want to. We carry their voices when needed.
We encourage the development and growth of leadership. We recognize the Inuit expertise, knowledges, ways of doing and values. Inuit leaders are positive models, and they use the skills of community members to achieve their mission and serve other people.
We value each and everyone’s feelings, abilities and worth. We esteem Inuit values, culture and history and we cherish the environment, land and animal wellness. We believe in the importance of the connection between those elements.
We aim to create openness and safe spaces for our teams and community members, to accept and to forgive themselves, others and the past, in hope to support and enlighten their healing’s journeys.
Teaching is sharing and being empowered through knowledge. It gives innovative and resourceful skills to know what to do and to become equal to one and another. At Saqijuq, our role is to create successful, inclusive and welcoming learning environments.
We acknowledge the impacts of colonization on family dynamics and community challenges that our staff, members and partners are going through, which affect everyone’s lives. We are sensitive to compassion fatigue and its consequences. We care and respect the connectivity between Inuit and their ways of living.
We join efforts altogether to reach the same goal, by working with everybody’s strengths as a whole team. We want to provide cultural and thoughtful services to Nunavimmiut with the help of all our partners and community members.
